“特指”是表示特别指定的、具体的、确定的、或被限定的人或事物,以区别于其他人或同类中的其它事物,与泛指相对。
8.1 确定特指——非常明确地指出何人、何物、何事,是一类人或事物中的特定对象。
8.1.1 定冠词可用于一切普通名词前,特指某已知的人或物:
① 特指前面已提到的人或事物,或与前面已提到的人或事物有关的事物:

I wanted a wine, but the bottle was empty. 我想喝杯酒,但酒瓶子是空的。
② 特指说话双方都知道或都能体会到的人或事物:
Shut the door. 把门关上。
He is in the dormitory. 他在宿舍。
Pass me the salt, please. 请把盐递给我。
Why not ask the teacher? 为什么不问问老师?
What do you think of the music? 你觉得这音乐怎样?
Turn to the left and you will find the post office. 向左转,你就会找到邮局。
③ 用于带后置定语的名词前,表示特定的人或事物:
Pass me the pen on the desk. 请把桌上的笔递给我。
The water in this river is drinkable. 这条河里的水能喝。
Do you know the man living next to you? 你认识住在你隔壁的那个人吗?
The watch you gave me keeps perfect time. 你给我的那块表走得很准。
④ 用于加强特指含义,意为“正好是、刚好是,最出色的、最著名的、最理想的、最典型的、最合适的”等,此时的定冠词需重读:
This is the[ðiː] life. 这便是人生。
He is the[ðiː] poet of the day. 他是现代最著名的诗人。
This is the[ðiː] word to be used here. 这是用在这里最恰当的字眼了。
That is the person I was looking for. 那正是我刚才在找的人。
8.1.2 定冠词用于其它有特指意义的词前表示特指:
①用于序数词前表示特指:
George Washington was the first President of the United States. 乔治•华盛顿是美国第一任总统。
February is the second month of the year. 二月是一年的第二个月。
Please pass me the second. 请递给我第二个。
There are five cars in the park, the third is mine. 停车场有五辆车,第三辆是我的。
②用于first, last, next, only, sole, same等词前表示特指:
He is in the next room. 他在隔壁。
He is the only child in the family. 他是家里的独生子。
He is the sole man I can trust. 他是我唯一能信赖的人。
I think they are the same thing. 我认为它们是同一件事。
He is the first (man) to come and the last (man) to leave. 他是第一个来的,最后一个离开的。
The bus has left. We had to wait for the next. 车开走了,我们得等下一辆车。
Now you do the same. 请按照示范来做。
③表区别的the other, the others特指“另一个,另一些”:
I was waiting for the sound of the other boot. 我在等着听第二只靴子掉下来的响声。(the other特指两者中的另一个)
Susie is here, but the other girls are still in the classroom. 苏西在这里,但是其他的女孩还在教室里。
He has two sons. One is thin and the other is fat. 他有两个儿子,一个较瘦,另一个较胖。
You can take this book. I will take the other. 你可以拿这本书,我拿另一本。
One his come; the others have not 来了一个,其他人还没有来。
Some of them have come back; where are the others? 他们中一些人已经回来了,其他人呢?
④表示前后照应的the above, the below; the former, the latter特指“上述,下述;前者,后者”:
All the above are asked to attend the meeting. 要求上述所有人员参加会议。
Jack and Bill are twins, but the former is taller than the latter. 杰克和比尔是双胞胎,但前者比后者个子高。
The right hand is clean, and so is the left. 右手干净,左手也干净。
⑤用于形容词比较级前,特指两个比较对象中“较……的一个”;用于有比较范围的形容词最高级前,特指比较对象中“最……的一个”:
He is the cleverer of the two boys. 他是这两个男孩中较聪明的一个。
New York is the largest city in the United States. 纽约是美国最大的城市。

8.2 不定特指——笼统地指出某人、某物、某事,却未明确而具体地说明何人、何物、何事,往往是“说者已知,听者未知”。
8.2.1 不定冠词用于表示不定特指:
①不定冠词与单数可数名词连用,笼统地指出某人或某物,但不具体说明何人或何物,通常用在谈话或语篇中第一次提及某人或某物时起引导作用:
I met an old man at the gate. 我在门口遇到一位老人(所指为某一特定老人,虽未具体说明,但说者心中清楚)。
I met her in a coffee shop near the station. 我在车站附近的一家咖啡馆和她碰面。
②不定冠词与序数词连用表示不定特指:
I want to read it a second time. 我想再看一次。
Please give me a second chance. 请再给我一次机会。
A: This is the second time that I’ve read the book. B: Do you want to read it a third time? 甲:这是我第二次看这本书。乙:你还想看第三次吗?
8.2.2 零冠词用于表示不定特指:
①零冠词与不可数名词连用表示不定特指:
Frost has killed several of our new plants. 寒霜冻坏了我们的一些新作物。
He got the job by influence. 他靠有权势的人得到了那份工作。
②零冠词与复数可数名词连用表示不定特指:
The book has illustrations. 这本书有些插图。
We have got pencils and rubbers. 我们有铅笔和橡皮擦。
Tickets, please. Show your tickets. 票,请出示你们的票。
8.2.3 不定限定词some用于表示不定特指:
some与单数可数名词搭配时,相当于a certain“某一”的含义。
Some boy has broken a window. 有个男孩打破了窗户。
Some student borrowed my pen. 有个学生借了我的笔。
He is doing business in some place in Guangdong. 他在广东的某个地方做生意。
There must be some reason for him to do so. 他这么做肯定有某种原因。
冠词是英语中十分重要、意义色彩非常复杂的词,它的使用率很高,是英语中最常用的词。
传统语法将冠词分为不定冠词和定冠词两类,现代英语将冠词分为不定冠词、定冠词和零冠词三类。
冠词是一种本身不能独立使用的虚词,一般放在名词前面,帮助说明这个名词的含义。
冠词的用法有其规律性,又有其习惯性。有时必须用不定冠词,有时必须用定冠词;有时既可用不定冠词也可用定冠词;有时不用或缺省冠词;有时用或不用冠词,用不定冠词或用定冠词,意义上又差别很大。

英语有很多容易混淆的词语。在英汉词典中有很多汉语释义雷同或相近的英语词汇,在很多情况下,由于语境、搭配、句型结构等不同,它们之间有的存在细微差异,有的存在很大差别;有些词义相同或相近的词汇在某些情况下可换用,但在另一些情况下却不能换用;这在许多同义词、近义词中都有类似情况,很容易误用和错用。在英语词汇中,有些单词相貌非常相似,但词义却不同,很容易张冠李戴。如果不了解同义词、近义词、近形词等易混词语的区别,尤其是这类词之间的细微差异和习惯用法,就掌握不到规范、地道的英语,在交际和写作中常令人匪夷所思,甚至闹出笑话,因此,熟悉和掌握易混词语的区别和用法是非常重要的。
为此,我学习和研究英语易混词20多年,辨析了560组常用的或疑难的易混词,Word排版,大32开,1128页,80万字,150万字符。为了与网友分享,又编辑了手机版。
